One of the main effectors of the second messenger cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is the ubiquitously expressed serine/threonine protein kinase, cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA). Binding of cAMP to the regulatory subunits of PKA results in a conformational change and the release of the catalytic subunits to phosphorylate nearby targets. To ensure spatially and temporally controlled phosphorylation of a subset of its substrates, PKA is tethered to intracellular compartments by A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs).
