Goal of the thesis is to take a closer look at how artificial neural networks (ANN) work. ANNs is a challenging subject and at a quick glance even a mystery, which was also the motivation for the subject. In this thesis the focus is on how the ANNs work mathematically and in the thesis project a few programs utilizing ANNs were built. The first program is an introduction to the basic structure of ANNs. The second program utilizes gradient descent in ANN training. The third program uses gradient descent to train a deep neural network.
