DESIGN: Double blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, randomised trial. METHODS: Consecutive ICU patients needing at least 48 h of mechanical ventilation were enrolled in a randomized trial with 3 arms: CHX, CHX-COL, and placebo (PLAC).
