Aunque Brasil siempre ha sido considerado entre los países más violentos de la región, en los últimos años, la violencia ha crecido y se ha complejizado exponencialmente. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo demostrar cómo dicho incremento está relacionado con la disputa entre organizaciones criminales por los mercados ilegales, particularmente en el Norte y Noreste del país desde la ruptura del pacto de no agresión que tenían el Primeiro Comando da Capital y el Comando Vermelho.
