To date, eight different mcr-variants have been identified encoding phosphoethanolamine transferases contributing to phosphoethanolamine addition to lipid A and thereby conferring colistin resistance. This novel mechanism of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance provides an efficient way in distributing colistin resistance.
