Transformations, Transitions and Transparency: An Exploration of Gender Identity and Expression

From media coverage of transgender celebrities to national discussions of rights for transgender people, transgender and gender non-conforming identities and experiences are more visible than ever. However, visibility doesn’t always equate to inclusion and equity. There is still much to be done and much that social workers can do. Regardless of specialization or area of practice, social workers ought to understand the dynamics of gender, gender identity and expression in order to further assist the transgender community. Because people are at varying stages of the transgender spectrum (from curiosity to exploration to gender reassignment/confirmation), social workers across settings and practices will find themselves working with this community and so should be prepared for their evolving needs. This training is designed to provide information about trans-identities and help attendees develop skills to provide support, treatment and advocacy that is trans-affirming, inclusive and prevents retraumatization
