The Global Sound Movement

Founded in 2015 and winners of the Times Higher Education award for ‘Excellence and Innovation in the Arts 2016’, the Global Sound Movement make a significant contribution to the field of sound archiving, by encouraging engagement with dying musical instruments and location recordings. Building on the work of Alan Lomax, R Murray Schafer, Chris Watson and Bernie Krause, the research of the Global Sound Movement is inspired by their diverse research into archiving, sound ecologies and location recordings. However, this project differs in that it seeks to make available the materials generated through the research to interested parties via new innovative digital technologies developed as part of the project. These include interactive applications that assist with education, virtual reality software, virtual instruments and sound libraries as evidenced on the GSM website ( www.globalsoundmovement.com ) – These new libraries are presented in a format that is coherent with digital audio workstations enabling music producers to explore the potential in this material and use them within new compositions sound design
