Numerical simulations of ductile fracture initiation caused by the interaction between a notch tip and a nearby hole under mixed-mode loading involving modes I and II are performed. Attention is restricted to plane strain, small-scale yielding conditions. The Gurson constitutive model that accounts for the ductile failure mechanisms of micro-void nucleation, growth and coalescence is employed within the framework of a finite deformation plasticity theory. The failure of the ligament connecting the notch tip and the hole by either microvoid coalescence or by intense plastic strain localization is modelled.
