Still, the two processes do have many interesting aspects in common. First, both of them were once deemed biochemically impossible and nonexistent in nature, but have now been identified as major factors in global carbon and nitrogen cycling. Second, the microorganisms responsible for both processes cannot be grown in pure culture yet; their detection and identification were based on molecular ecology, tracer studies, use of lipid biomarkers, and enrichment cultures.
