Data in the literature show that the addition of FDG-PET definitely alters clinical management in patients with potentially resectable NSCLC by adequately staging the mediastinum and detecting previously unknown distant metastases. Thus, the number of noncurative thoracotomies and unnecessary mediastinoscopies is reduced.
