METHODS AND RESULTS: Addition of synthetic Phr pentapeptides to the growth medium, or overproduction of pre-Phr peptides, slightly improved the transcription of the aprE gene in B. subtilis. Disruption of certain rap genes similarly improved the transcription of the aprE gene.
