I want to thank Miikka Ruokanen for the clarity and sensitivity with which he replied (IBMR, July 1990) to my comments on his April 1990 article concerning the teaching of the Second Vatican Council on non-Christian religions. His reply enables me to focus, I hope with equal clarity and sensitivity, on what remains the fundamental difference in the way each of us understands the contents and significance of what the council had to say about other religious traditions
