The widespread use of wireless devices such as smartphones and connected objects leads to an increasing emergence of infrastructure-less networks relying on device-to-device communication: ad hoc networks. Applications of this type of network vary widely from military operations to emergency situations. Scalability is a key property for some use cases involving a large number of devices, also called nodes. We mean by scalability, the ability of the network to increase in size without drastic loss of performance and with a cost-effective network maintenance.
