We postulate that in patients with hyperhomocysteinemia increased intracellular formation of S-adenosylhomocysteine decreases free intracellular adenosine. Subsequently, facilitated diffusion of extracellular adenosine into cells through dipyridamole-sensitive transporters is enhanced, limiting adenosine receptor stimulation.
