La méthode ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) est une technique prometteuse pour l’examen de couches de peintures historiques, notamment des peintures à l’huile. Des mesures en ToF-SIMS de coupes de l’Agneau Mystique (1432) des Frères Van Eyck, par contre, n’ont montré qu’un faible signal d’acides gras dans des couches dont la nature huileuse a bien été démontrée par d’autres techniques. Cette observation remet en question l’aptitude de la méthode ToF-SIMS pour établir l’identité huileuse de couches de peintures.
