Topography and Toponymy in the Ancient Near East: Perspectives and Prospects

This volume is the indirect result of the papers presented at an international conference held at the Université catholique de Louvain on 27-28 February 2014. The title of this conference was “Topography and Toponymy in Perspectives and Prospects” (“Topographie et toponymie au Proche-Orient ancient: Projets et développements”). It was organized in the framework of the Work Package 3 (“Historical Geography”) of the IAP Project “Greater Mesopotamia: Reconstrcution of Its Environment and History” (IAP 7/14) financed by the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) and brought together both Belgian and international scholars working on historical geography. The twelve papers published in this volume are arranged according to the region they deal with. The first part of the volume contains four articles on Anatolia, discussing Graeco-Roman Phrygia, Cilicia, Pisidia and Papmhylia. In the second part, concentrating on the Levant and Mesopotamia, also four studies can be found. Finally, four aticles on Iran and Elam make up the third and last part of the present volume. Here various names, not only of cieties but also of fields, in this region are studied
