This research undertakes the study of the men who work copper and its alloys in the Flanders region, especially in Douai, between the 13th and the 14th century, by focusing on productions, techniques, materials, the topography of workshops but also the level of the craftsmen’s wealth and social relations. Workshops cater to the high demand for copper alloy objects. While the Mosan production centers are better known, the workshops of cities not reputed for metallurgy have not been studied much, if at all. This work intends to fill up this gap, and aims to understand not only the production of these secondary workshops, but also the use and the biography of these daily-life objects that make up an important part of medieval material culture....
