The nineteenth century saw the birth of national music schools in Europe. In all four corners of the continent, composers would try to develop their art by using language or even folklore in order to use it as a means of national expression. The phenomenon, however, poses a question in Belgium because of its population consisting of two distinct linguistic groups. Since it seems difficult to conceive of using a common language or folklore in these two groups, other solutions were envisaged.
