Grief and passion in the literature of entrepreneurial failure and opportunity

The current research on entrepreneurial failures considers grief to be a negative feeling of unmet expectations, which is part of the learning process. However, grief has not been fully defined from the social perspective. Although the literature acknowledges that grief is a collective phenomenon, studies have traditionally concentrated on an individual's financial and emotional costs, venture failures, and critical reflection and action in recovering from failure. Thus, the definition of social learning (instead of simply venture failure), and particularly its processual elements alongside the positive feeling related to opportunities (passion) that can be created from it, is missing. The purpose of this paper is to generate the detailed definition of grief and passion as a catalyst of social learning from entrepreneurial failures, which can be transformed into opportunities. This paper contributes to the research on entrepreneurial failures by explaining how grief can be transformed into a passionate entrepreneurial opportunity. On this basis, the paper offers a future agenda for researching entrepreneurial failures and opportunities with respect to processual elements, namely, expansiveness, shared objects of learning, and becoming-other. By integrating two streams of literature (on entrepreneurial grief and passion) that consider the potential to create entrepreneurial opportunity, this paper demonstrates that until now, those three research directions have remained underdeveloped as positive factors of coping from an entrepreneurial failure
