This lecture and workshop are divided into three parts. In the first part, the historical development of models of translation competence and translation competence development will be critical reviewed and gaps explored. The growing awareness of the situatedness of translation work and the key influence and constraints of sociotechnical systems on translation competence and its development/acquisition is explored. A number of key models are placed under close scrutiny with reference to the results of empirical experimental and workplace research undertaken at our Institute and elsewhere.
