What occurs within our primary schools does not (and has never) occurred within a vacuum. Education is not a neutral concept. Kelly (2009) suggests that it is not possible to discuss education without considering how it is influenced by other contexts. Within this chapter we will explore some of the drivers which impact on primary schools. As you read the chapter we’d like you to consider the following questions: What are the internal and external drivers that impact locally on your school? How do these factors impact on your role as a teacher and the choices and decisions you make?
