This article discusses the origin and the role of saliva in the mouth, and how by measuring substances in saliva, we can diagnose a range of human diseases. Saliva is simple to sample and requires no specialised training, unlike blood. A range of human diseases and infections can be diagnosed from saliva, and this review discusses the most recent literature describing the specific biomarkers used to diagnose each disease
