Roman Jakobson, in his 1956 essay on aphasia, identifies metaphor and metonymy as fundamental processes in communication. He sees communication progressing along one of two paths, the metaphoric and the metonymic, and claims that “in normal behaviour both processes are continually operative” (Jakobson 1956:90). Metaphor has subsequently been the focus of intense scholarly activity, thanks to the pioneering work of Lakoff and Johnson (1980, 1999) and now Metaphor Studies is a discipline in its own right.
