Despite Science's triumphs, Vitalism - a philosophy rejected by Science - remains alive and well, and this paper explores three reasons why this might be. The first is that the old certainties of Modern times are losing their hold on our imagination; the second that Biomedicine has not met important expectations; the third that Science may have reached a point where it can bridge the traditional chasm between vitalism and mechanism. I would even argue that Science is preparing the basis for a new Vitalism. Copyright © 2002 Whurr Publishers Ltd
