Before the digital revolution, it was technically difficult and very expensive to make videos. Now the equipment is much cheaper and new tools mean that academics and technical support staff can make educational videos relatively easily. This report recounts my experience with making videos for use in teaching in HE and examines the ways they might be used and the pedagogic theory that supports that use. Many academics now make videos themselves with limited technical support and I discuss the technology and techniques required to do this well. I suggest we can produce much better quality videos than simple lecture capture and I examine ways in which that can be done that address their educational function.
