Preterm birth occurs in approximately 12% of pregnancies in developed countries and as high as 25% in developing countries. Preterm birth accounts for up to 70-80% of neonatal mortality and morbidity rate. Study shows that Africans and African-American women are at a higher risk for spontaneous preterm labor and birth.
