Though Great-Britain is a country with many educated citizens, superstitions still have a great impact on their lives. They are a strongly credulous nation. Even though some of the superstitions and tales may sound absurd and scary, sometimes rather foolish, the British seem to be holding on to them. Superstition has been deeply influential in history. According to Wikipedia, the word ‘superstition’ is used to refer to folk beliefs, which are considered irrational. To define what a superstition is, the best to say would be that it is a belief which is not based on reason or knowledge, but on myths and magic. It is a belief that the world is governed by chance. Some superstitions are often called ‘Old wives tales’ and can be applied to practices surrounding luck and spiritual beings. Often, these beliefs are spread by tittle-tattles, and it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint their exact origin. People may believe in them without having any evidence.1 Every nation has its superstitions. Through my research I found quite many the Brits believe in.
