In the first part of the thesis we consider the invariance of the arithmetic mean with respect to a generalization of the quasi-arithmetic means, and give the general solution under some regularity assumptions. In the second part we focus on the classes of Gini and Stolarsky means, and solve the invariance equation in several settings. We consider the cases when all means involved in the invariance equation come from the same class and also the cases when the three means are either Gini or Stolarsky means. The procedure involves tedious computations, therefore we used the computer algebra package Maple V Release 9 to perform these calculations.
