A T limfociták érése a tímuszban történik meg. E sejtek fejlődésük során random generálják a minden T sejtre egyedileg jellemző T sejt receptort. A random képződés eredménye, hogy a sejtek 90%-a olyan T sejt receptort hordoz, ami nem is képes az MHC molekulákhoz hozzákapcsolódni. Ezen hibás sejtek még a tímuszban elhalnak. Egyre több adat támasztja alá, hogy a timociták környezetében keletkező molekulák azok, amelyek a gyors pusztulást kiváltják.
