Analyse von Auswirkungen auf die Biodiversität im Rahmen der Ökobilanz

The flora, fauna and their surrounding ecosystems on earth are drastically decreasing since the era of industrialisation. Currently, the extinction rate of species is measured to be between 0.01% and 0.1% per year and is expected to increase in the future. This decline of life on earth is influencing human well-being because humans are dependent on the services ecosystems provide. In order to counteract this development, the United Nations (UN) endorsed the protection of life on earth in two specific targets within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), namely the protection of life on land and life below water. One method which can be utilized for that matter is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The inclusion of aspects of biodiversity as impact category in LCA allows for identifying hotspots of a product system regarding its impacts on ecosystems worldwide and to counteract negative impacts. The overall goal of the thesis is the development of a biodiversity impact assessment method for the inclusion into LCA to enhance the protection of biodiversity. To meet this goal, two research questions have to be answered: 1. What are the main gaps and challenges with regard to the implementation of biodiversity into LCA? and 2. How to implement biodiversity in LCA to tackle the identified gaps and challenges? As a starting point, the thesis analyses how biodiversity is currently considered in LCA by means of a literature review. For this Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) methods which address iodiversity are gathered and analysed with regard to pressures on biodiversity and aspects of biodiversity they are addressing. Moreover, the application of the existing methods is investigated. Limitations and gaps of current research related to the inclusion of biodiversity into LCA are highlighted. Consequentially, developments which are needed to include biodiversity in the different phases of the LCA are suggested. Based on these recommendations a method for a biodiversity impact assessment (Biodiversity Impact Assessment+ (BIA+)) is developed. Building on existing models which seek to quantify the impacts of human activities on biodiversity, the developed method consists of two components: the impact on the Biodiversity Status (BS), represented as Impact Function (IF), within a Major Habitat Type (MHT) proposed by the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) and a weighting factor (Habitat Factor (HF)) for the 14 MHTs, which accounts for the multiplicity of biodiversity. In order to solve the main challenge of developing IFs which emerged during the development of the method, a complementary approach is introduced. An index measuring the BS is developed and the impacts on it caused by different parameters such as soil pH, share of cultivated land and temperature are statistically analysed through curve fitting. The proposed approach is applied for all MHTs around the world. Finally, a case study is conducted which uses the BIA+ method for the calculation of the impacts of European biodiesel in 2010 on freshwater biodiversity. The impacts are assessed for the substances 1,4-Dichlorobenzene (1,4-DCB) and phosphorus. For this, inventory data is gathered by means of the grey water footprint of the underlying crop production for biodiesel. The results reveal that existing LCIA methods which address biodiversity focus on the evaluation of the impacts of land use on species diversity. Out of 37 identified methods 17 relate to land use. Even though more than 20 pressures are classified as being relevant for biodiversity impact assessment, only eight are considered by existing LCIA methods. Biodiversity is defined as genetic, species and ecosystem diversity, but the aspect mostly addressed is species diversity (in almost 80% of the methods). Three methods address ecosystem diversity, none of the methods assesses impacts on genetic diversity. Less than 20% of the considered methods address biodiversity as one indicator without differentiation of the levels. The results with regard to the application of the LCIA methods reveal that biodiversity is usually not considered. Out of 60 case studies only one assessed the impacts of the considered product on biodiversity. In order to overcome the identified challenges, new impact assessment methods considering more pressures on biodiversity and aspects of biodiversity have to be developed. Therefore, the methodological enhanced and more easy applicable BIA+ is proposed. Through the consideration of the indicator BS, which is defined by experts, biodiversity is addressed with regard to genetic, species and ecosystem diversity. The first part of the method, the impact on the BS of different pressures such as eutrophication and acidification is assessed by means of experts judgements and expressed as IF. The second part, the HF contains the indicators species richness, ecoregion scarcity, uniqueness of endemic species and value of threat to account for the variety of biodiversity world wide. It ranges from 0.63 to 1.82. In addition to its global applicability the advantage of the BIA+ is the range of environmental impacts on biodiversity which can be assessed. The usage of the experts judgement for the development of the IF is the main challenge of the BIA+ which has to be solved. For this, the index BS which operationalises the expert subjective definition of the BS in the BIA+ and contains the indicators number of species, number of endemic species, share of grassland and share of forest is introduced. The impacts of the parameters soil pH, share of cultivated land and temperature on the BS are analysed using the spatial resolution of MHTs. As a result 42 functions are provided which relate the impacts of these three parameters with the BS in all 14 MHTs. The functions serve as IFs for the inclusion in the BIA+ method. The case study shows that the loss of freshwater biodiversity induced by the European biodiesel in 2010 ranges from 8.08*10−06 points in Brazil to 0.5 points in France in one average freshwater basin. The 1,4-DCB which is emitted due to the usage of pesticides is the main contributor to this biodiversity loss. It is also shown that the HF as a weighting factor does not affect the results much. Nevertheless, the case study results reveal that the BIA+ method is globally applicable and plausible. The BIA+ method and the complementary approach to simplify its application can and should be developed further by means of recent research achievements, e.g. by including new indicators or another definition of biodiversity. However, the BIA+ allows LCA practitioners to assess local potential environmental impacts on biodiversity on a global level.Seit der Industrialisierung steigt der Verlust der weltweiten Ökosysteme sowie der darin enthaltenen Flora und Fauna drastisch an. Die weltweite Artenverlustrate wird auf mindestens 0,01% pro Jahr geschätzt und als die sechste große Krise des Aussterbens bezeichnet. Im Gegensatz zu den fünf vorigen Krisen wird diese jedoch nur von einer Spezies verursacht - dem Menschen. Damit beeinflusst der Mensch gegenwärtige und zukünftige Generationen, denn er ist von Ökosystemen und seinen Dienstleistungen abhängig. Um dieser Zerstörung entgegenzuwirken wurden im Rahmen der Sustainable Development Goals (dt. Ziele für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung) unter anderen zwei Ziele zum Schutz der weltweiten Ökosysteme von den Vereinten Nationen spezifiziert: der Schutz von Leben unter Wasser und Leben an Land. Teil der beiden Ziele ist die Identifizierung und Beurteilung der Auswirkungen menschlichen Verhaltens auf die Biodiversität. Eine Methode die dies leistet, ist die Ökobilanz (engl. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)). Sie dient zur Abschätzung von potentiellen Umweltauswirkungen von Produktsystemen über ihren gesamten Lebensweg und wird weltweit von vielen Industrien verwendet, um Produktsysteme zu bewerten und zu verbessern. Die Einbindung von Biodiversität als Wirkungskategorie in die Ökobilanz erlaubt die Bestimmung von Wirkungshotspots innerhalb eines Produktsystems. Bereits seit mehr als 20 Jahren wird daran geforscht Biodiversität adäquat in die Ökobilanz einzubinden. Dennoch gibt es bisher keinen weithin akzeptierten Ansatz, mit welchem die potentiellen Auswirkungen von Produktsystemen auf die Biodiversität umfassend bewertet werden können. Ziel der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung einer Wirkungsabschätzungsmethode, welche direkt in die Ökobilanz eingebunden werden kann, um somit den Schutz der Biodiversität zu fördern. So soll ein Beitrag zur aktuellen Forschung geleistet werden. Die Arbeit setzt sich aus vier Teilen zusammen, welche zur Beantwortung der folgenden Hauptforschungsfragen dienen sollen: 1. Was sind die aktuellen Forschungslücken und Problemfelder in Bezug auf die Einbindung von Biodiversität in die Ökobilanz? und 2. Wie kann Biodiversität in die Ökobilanz eingebunden werden, wenn die aktuellen Problemfelder adressiert werden sollen? Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden die existierenden Forschungsansätze zur Wirkungsab-schätzung bezüglich Biodiversität analysiert und Stärken und Schwächen aufgedeckt. Es wird identifiziert, welche Treiber des Biodiversitätsverlustes und welche Aspekte der Biodiversität betrachtet werden. DesWeiteren wird die Anwendung der existierenden Methoden analysiert. Der erste Teil fasst den aktuellen Forschungsstand zur Einbeziehung von Biodiversität in die Ökobilanz zusammen und gibt Empfehlungen für zukünftige Forschungsschwerpunkte. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird, bezogen auf die Ergebnisse des ersten Teils, die Wirkungsabschätzungsmethode Biodiversity Impact Assessment+ (BIA+) für die Biodiversität entwickelt. Diese beruht auf vorhergegangene methodische Ansätze und umfasst zwei wichtige Komponenten. Zum werden Gewichtungsfaktoren für die 14 Biome, welche vom World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) klassifiziert wurden, um die Welt in Ökoregionen einzuteilen, berechnet. Zum anderen wird die Wirkung auf den Status der Biodiversität innerhalb dieser Biome, verursacht von Parametern, die verschiedene Treiber für den Biodiversitätsverlust repräsentieren, ermittelt. Die Gewichtungsfaktoren werden benötigt, um die weltweiten Unterschiede von Biodiversität betrachten zu können und setzen sich aus vier Indikatoren zusammen. Der funktionelle Zusammenhang zwischen dem Status der Biodiversität und den zu betrachtenden Parametern wird von Experten ermittelt. Neben der globalen Anwendbarkeit und dem Einbezug der drei Biodiversitätsebenen genetische Vielfalt, Artenvielfalt und Ökosystemvielfalt, hat die Methode den Vorteil, dass mit ihr mehrere Treiber für den Biodiversitätsverlust betrachtet werden können. Im dritten Teil wird ein Ansatz vorgeschlagen, welcher die durch die Methodenentwicklung entstandene Herausforderung adressiert. Diese ist die Entwicklung der Wirkungsfunktionen auf Grundlage von Experteneinschätzungen. Als Lösung wird die statistische Analyse von Auswirkungen von Parametern wie Temperatur, Anteil der kultivierten Fläche und Boden pH Wert auf den entwickelten Index Biodiversitätsstatus vorgeschlagen. Der Lösungsvorschlag ist weltweit anwendbar. Der vierte und letzte Teil der Arbeit beinhaltet eine Fallstudie, in welcher die entwickelte Methode BIA+ für die Abschätzung der Wirkungen von Phosphor und 1,4-Dichlorbenzol auf die Süßwasserbiodiversität angewendet wird. Die Wirkungen der adressierten Substanzen, welche während der Biokraftstoffproduktion entstehen, werden für den in 2010 in Europa konsumierten Biokraftstoff berechnet. Ziel der Fallstudie ist es, die Anwendbarkeit und Plausibilität der BIA+ Methode festzustellen. Des Weiteren werden Stärken und Schwächen der Methode in der Anwendung offengelegt. Die BIA+ Methode als auch der dazugehörige Lösungsansatz aus dem dritten Teil der Arbeit können und sollten mit Hilfe neuer Erkenntnisse weiter entwickelt werden. Beispielsweise könnten andere Aspekte der Biodiversität, zum Beispiel Ökosystemdienstleistungen, in Betracht bezogen werden. Die Arbeit unterstützt Ökobilanzanwender bei der Abschätzung von Produktauswirkungen auf die Biodiversität. Zusammenfassend kann gesagt werden, dass mit Hilfe der vorliegenden Arbeit aktuelle Forschungsansätze in Bezug auf die Bewertung von Produktauswirkungen auf die Biodiversität voran gebracht werden können
