In South Africa, the poultry product industry consumes a significant quantity of potable water ranging from 4.2 to 16.7 m3 per tonne of live carcass weight for slaughtering and processing of birds including for cleaning and sanitising of equipment (Park et al., 2012). The wastewater volumes generated from the poultry slaughterhouse ranges from 2.0 to 5.1 L per tonne of live weight kill (LWK) with an average of 3.9 m3 per tonne LWK (Oh, 2012).
