This thesis attempts to deepen our understanding of the role of institutional investors in corporate governance. While numerous studies have examined the effectiveness of institutional investors’ monitoring and have taken into account the heterogeneity of the various types of such investors, there has been less research on differences in their portfolios and specifically on the incentives that they may have to monitor individual companies. Due to resource constraints, it would be logical for institutional investors to concentrate their monitoring efforts on a subset of the firms held in their portfolios that offer the greatest likelihood of obtaining benefits that exceed the cost of monitoring.
