The energy-angle distribution of the mean number of Cherenkov photons produced by a relativistic charged particle moving in a non-transparent medium is derived. Calculations show that taking into account absorption in the medium results in broadening of the angular distribution at a fixed photon energy compared to the standard theory for Cherenkov radiation of Frank and Tamm developed for transparent media
