Various mouse strains display different types of sensitivity to mouse hepatitis virus type 3 (MHV3) infection: resistance, full susceptibility (acute hepatitis leading to death), and semi-susceptibility characterized by occurrence of paralysis and viral persistence. In order to study the mechanisms of viral persistency, persistent infections were established -in -vitro in mouse lymphoid cell line cultures and were characterized in terms of virus production, occurrence of cytoplasmic viral antigens and cell lysis.
