Microbial and chemical processes in the sediment of standing waters have a big influence on the release of nutrients and the trophic state. Due to the strong interactions between sediment and water body and the storage of materials sediments can be consulted as an important additional source of information for the evaluation of the trophic state and for the estimation of future trophic developments. Because of relatively small fluctuations the parameters in the sediment and pore water are well suitable for a trophic validation.
