Effects of drought on water relations, growth and biomass distribution in peumus boldus molina (monimiaceae) plants grown in a nursery

Peumus boldus (boldo) es una especie arbórea endémica de Chile que se desarrolla en un clima mediterráneo, caracterizado por una estación estival con baja disponibilidad hídrica en el suelo, elevada radiación solar y altas temperaturas. Bajo estas condiciones, el boldo debe desarrollar respuestas ecofisiológicas que permitan sobrellevar períodos de restricción hídrica. Con el objetivo de conocer dichas respuestas se estableció un ensayo de restricción hídrica controlada bajo condiciones naturales de verano. Un grupo de plantas fueron sometidas a riego restringido (TR), y otro se mantuvo con riego permanente (TT). Se evaluó el potencial hídrico foliar a pre-alba (Ψa) y el contenido hídrico relativo a pre-alba (CHRa), junto con parámetros derivados de las curvas presión/volumen (P/V). Mensualmente se midió el incremento en altura (L) y diámetro a la altura del cuello (DAC). Además, se evaluó la biomasa total por componentes, y la relación biomasa aérea/biomasa radical (BA/BR) al inicio y término del período de restricción hídrica. P. boldus realiza ajuste elástico durante la restricción hídrica, lo cual le permite sobrellevar la reducción del potencial hídrico y CHRa, manteniendo el turgor celular adecuado de los tejidos para su funcionamiento, y da prioridad al crecimiento radical por sobre la parte aérea, independiente del estado hídrico en el sustrato. El estudio informa sobre los atributos del boldo, complementando el registro de las principales especies del bosque esclerófilo mixto chileno. Se discute la aplicación de los resultados para afrontar futuros escenarios de reforestación, producción de plantas y cambio climático en zonas mediterráneas.Peumus boldus (boldo) is an endemic tree species of Chile that grows in a mediterranean climate, characterized by a summer with low water availability in the soil, high solar radiation and high temperatures. In these conditions, boldo develops physiological mechanisms to survive under restricted water availability. To study the effects of water restriction on the growth of the plants, a trial was carried out under natural summer conditions with two irrigation regimes: well watered plants (TT) and controlled water restriction (TR). Predawn leaf water potential (psi a), water content relative to predawn (CHR alpha) and parameters derived from pressure / volume (P/V) curves were evaluated. Height increase (L) and root collar diameter (DAC) were measured monthly. Total biomass by components, and the shoot biomass/root biomass ratio (BA/BR) were also evaluated at the beginning and the end of the water restriction period. P. boldus showed an elastic adjustment during water restriction period, allowing the reduction of the water potential and CHR alpha, maintaining an adequate cellular turgor of the tissues, and favors root growth over shoot and leaf growth, independent of the water status in the substrate. The study provides information about the attributes of boldo, complementing the registry of the main species of the Chilean sclerophyllous forest.
