This paper focuses on the discourse surrounding ethnic regeneration during the Perestroika (перестройка) period of the former Soviet Union and considers the development and nature of this discourse through case study analysis of the Koryo-saram (the Korean diaspora of the former Soviet Union) and its newspaper, Lenin Gichi (The Flag of Lenin). The case study in this paper reveals a focus on independent approaches to ethnic regeneration within Koryosaram society during the Perestroika period. Although during the Soviet era all Koryo-saram were Soviet citizens, they were "nationalized" by the respective countries of the former Soviet Union following its collapse.
