The chiral Co(III)-complex-templated Brønsted acids were found to be efficient bifunctional phase-transfer catalysts for the highly enantioselective bromocyclization of protected tryptamines with readily available <i>N</i>-bromosuccinimide (NBS) under an air atmosphere.
