<p>Sepsis is characterized by injury of pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVEC) leading to barrier dysfunction. Multiple mechanisms promote septic PMVEC barrier dysfunction, including interaction with circulating leukocytes and PMVEC apoptotic death.
