Are African women capable… of loving? African women at the intersection of (post)colonial, sexual, and feminist identities

An anthology reune short stories sobre o tema do amor, escritas por mulheres de diferentes países de África. A organizadora, Ama Ata Aidoo, escritora e feminista ganense, sublinha que a antologia pretende contrariar a ideia colonial de que “African love” seria “uma anomalia” e “the myth about African women as impoverished helpless victims.” Igualmente, Léonora Miano, escritora e feminista camaronesa, dirige duas antologias de “nouvelles”: Première nuit. Une Anthologie du Désir, com textos de jovens homens negros, e Volcaniques. Une Anthologie du Plaisir, com textos de jovens mulheres negras de África e das Antilhas. As três coleções de contos inserem-se numa das mais persistentes reivindicações das feministas africanas: a da descolonização de África, das mulheres africanas e dos feminismos. É curiosa a via escolhida: a construção de uma africanidade e de feminilidades e masculinidades negras e africanas, através da apropriação do “amor” (ou sexualidade) como o ato de empoderamento de africanos e africanas objetificados/as pelo discurso colonial, que se afirmam enquanto sujeitos plenos por serem capazes de “amar” e narrar esse “amor negro e africano”. Esta comunicação pretende analisar as articulações discursivas complexas que se revelam nestas antologias entre imposições coloniais e resistências anticoloniais, no que diz respeito às identidades culturais e sexuais, aos conceitos e agendas feministas e ao lugar dos géneros literários nestes processos.African Love Stories. An anthology gathers short stories on love written by women from different African countries. The editor, Ama Ata Aidoo, Ghanean writer and feminist, underlines that the anthology wishes to counter the colonial idea that “African love” is “an anomaly”, as well as “the myth about African women as impoverished helpless victims.” Léonora Miano, also a writer and a feminist, but from french-speaking Cameroon, publishes two anthologies of love “nouvelles”: Première nuit. Une Anthologie du Désir, writen by young black men, and Volcaniques. Une Anthologie du Plaisir, written by young black women, both from Africa and the Antilles. These three anthologies fit into one of the most persistent demands of African feminisms: the decolonising of Africa, of African women and of feminisms. The strategy chosen here is curious: the construction of an Africanness and of black and African femininities and masculinities, through the claim over “love” (or sexuality) as an act of empowerment by African men and women that were objectified by the colonial discourse and assert themselves as full subjects because they are capable of “loving” and of narrating their “African black love”. In my paper I wish to analyse the complex discoursive articulations that these anthologies show between colonial impositions and anticolonial resistances, in terms of cultural and sexual identities, feminist concepts and agendas, and the place of literary genres in these processes
