L'ANALYSE POLLINIQUE DES COPROLITHES : UN OUTIL POUR LA RECONSTRUCTION DU PALEOENVIRONNEMENT

International audienceCoprolites, fossilized excrements, produced most often by carnivores whose food intake includes crushed bone (Canidae, Hyenidae), are an invaluable source of information for the palynologist as they often contain pollen ingested by animals with their food and water or in other ways. These grains of pollen are therefore able to provide a picture of the vegetation contemporary with the life of an animal at a particular point of time at the site where the animal was found and within an area determined by the movements of the animal or the animals it consumed. for paleontologists and archeologists, coprolites are often the only source of information on vegetation especially in the case of very old deposits and in mineral conditions often unfavourable to the preservation of pollen. Three examples are described (Andone, Saint-Vallier, Grotte des deux Ouvertures) and a synthesis is provided on the potential paleoenvironmental information available from coprolites in general based on about 30 analyses ranging from the Villafranchian to the Middle Ages.Les coprolithes, excréments fossilisés, produits le plus souvent par des Carnivores broyeurs d'os (Canidés, Hyénidés), constituent un matériel précieux pour le palynologue car ils contiennent souvent du pollen ingéré par les animaux, avec la nourriture et l'eau entre autres. Ces grains de pollen donnent donc une image de la végétation contemporaine de la vie de l'animal, autour du site qu'il fréquentait à une période donnée, dans un rayon variable suivant les déplacements effectués par l'animal ou les animaux consommés. Pour les paléontologues ou les archéologues, ils sont souvent la seule source de connaissance du milieu végétal passé dans le cas des sédiments minéraux fréquemment défavorables à la conservation du pollen, surtout dans les gisements très anciens. Trois exemples sont exposés (Andone, Saint-Vallier, Grotte des deux Ouvertures) ainsi qu'une synthèse sur le potentiel d'informations paléoenvironnementales des coprolithes en général s'appuyant sur une trentaine d'analyses dans une fourchette chronologique allant du Villafranchien au Moyen Âge
