International audienceThe fisherman's relationship to the marine environment is based upon a different kind of knowledge and appropriation than that linked with the land. Between the depths of the sea which neither the eye nor the hand can reach and the men who exploit theses depths comes the tool, an instrument of perception as much as one of exploitation and a privileged contributo to knowledge. Closely tied to fishing techniques, this relationship to the environment also varies considerably according to the "craft" in - other words the type of fishing - as the difference between practice of stationary fishing and trawling shows here in two Provencal fischermen communities.La relation des pêcheurs au milieu marin repose sur des modes de connaissance et d'appropriation différents de ceux auxquels se prête l'environnement terrestre.
