The boom in aerial survey in the 1970s gave a measure of the sometimes spectacular development of this phenomenon in certain regions (Picardie, Beauce). The recent progress of the field walking made it possible to qualify, region by region, the methods of implantation and diffusion of the villa. Yet, paradoxically, the term villa still arouses debates between archaeologists and historians.
