Abstract: This paper reports the status quo and impact of leadership in the healthcare sector in South Africa. A gap analysis was conducted in reviewing relevant literature of articles published between 2013-2018 related to the impact of leadership in the country’s healthcare. This was to provide an understanding and clear awareness of the influence leadership has. It was established that leadership in healthcare falls short in addressing critical challenges in the sector. Considering the importance of leadership in healthcare, it is recommended that government should prioritize investing in leadership programs from undergraduate health programs to shelter the future of healthcare in South Africa
