Alluvial fans are sedimentary deposits growing at the outlet of drainage areas. This position makes them valuable sedimentary records. Three key parameters determine their geometry: the water discharge, the sediment size and the sediment discharge. In this manuscript, based on three series of experiments, we quantify independently the influence of each parameter on the structure of the deposit. We find that the morphology of the fan is controlled by the river that builds it.For a low sediment discharge, the river that feeds the fan is at the threshold of sediment motion.
