Les Arvernes et leurs voisins du Massif Central à l’époque romaine. Une archéologie du développement des territoires

International audienceThis special issue in two volumes presents an overview of the work carried out in the Archeology Laboratory of the Center of History "Spaces and Cultures" of the Clermont Auvergne University, with emphasis on the most recent research, launched since the mid-2000s as part of the DYSPATER project. By studying the spatial dynamics of territorial development in Massif Central from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages, this project aims to propose a new reading of archeo-environmental data by resorting to the concept of development dear to economists and geographers. Particularly integrative, this concept is well adapted to the processing of interdisciplinary data. Applied to the question of the Romanization of the Massif Central, it is likely to shed light on the complexity of the mechanisms involved in territorial dynamics. But above all, this concept presents the interest of obliging the archaeologist to go beyond the stage of description to analyze, explain and model processes, in their spatial and temporal dimension, taking into account the diversity of actors and factors involved as well as the interactions of scales and temporalities. Emphasis is placed on the spatial dimension of development: through the identification, mapping and combination of specific markers under geographical information systems, it is possible to highlight the development poles and their capacity to structure the space in time, so as to evaluate the scales and degrees of integration and interdependence of the spaces concerned.The first part of the book is dedicated to the definition of the concept of development, the presentation of the DYSPATER project and the main methods of spatial archeology implemented. The second part presents an overview of the archaeological and palaeoenvironmental research carried out in the Limagne plain, the political heart and economic heart of the Arverni territory. The third part concerns the integration of the uplands in the regional economy, through the example of Haute-Combraille, Livradois-Forez and North-East Cantal. The fourth part addresses the problem of structuring territories based on the identification of actors, markers and networks. She is interested in elites, agglomerations, roads, villas and places of worship. The fifth part questions the ancient "consumer society" through the study of material culture. Finally, the synthesis tries to sketch a model of regional development for the Roman era.Ce numéro spécial en deux volumes présente un panorama des travaux conduits au sein du Laboratoire d’Archéologie du Centre d’Histoire « Espaces et Cultures » de l’Université Blaise Pascal, en mettant l’accent sur les recherches les plus récentes, lancées depuis le milieu des années 2000 dans le cadre du projet DYSPATER. En étudiant les Dynamiques spatiales du développement des territoires dans le Massif Central de l’Âge du Fer au Moyen Âge, ce projet a pour ambition de proposer une nouvelle lecture des données archéo-environnementales en recourant au concept de développement cher aux économistes et aux géographes. Particulièrement intégrateur, ce concept est bien adapté au traitement des données issues de l’interdisciplinarité. Appliqué à la question de la romanisation du Massif Central, il est susceptible d’éclairer la complexité des mécanismes en jeu dans les dynamiques territoriales. Mais surtout, ce concept présente l’intérêt d’obliger l’archéologue à dépasser le stade de la description pour analyser, expliquer et modéliser les processus, dans leur dimension spatiale et temporelle, en prenant en considération la diversité des acteurs et des facteurs impliqués ainsi que les interactions d’échelles et de temporalités. L’accent est porté sur la dimension spatiale du développement : il s’agit, à travers l’identification, la cartographie et la combinaison sous système d’information géographique de marqueurs spécifiques, de mettre en évidence les pôles de développement et leur capacité à structurer l’espace dans le temps, de manière à évaluer les échelles et les degrés d’intégration et d’interdépendance des espaces concernés.La première partie de l’ouvrage est consacrée à la définition du concept de développement, à la présentation du projet DYSPATER et des principales méthodes de l’archéologie spatiale mises en œuvre. La seconde partie dresse un bilan des recherches archéologiques et paléoenvironnementales conduites dans la plaine de la Limagne, cœur politique et poumon économique du territoire des Arvernes. La troisième partie concerne la question de l’intégration de la moyenne montagne dans l’économie régionale, à travers l’exemple de la Haute Combraille, du Livradois-Forez et du Nord-Est du Cantal. La quatrième partie aborde le problème de la structuration des territoires à partir de l’identification des acteurs, des marqueurs et des réseaux. Elle s’intéresse successivement aux élites, aux agglomérations, au réseau routier, aux villae et aux lieux de culte. La cinquième partie interroge la « société de consommation » antique à travers l’étude de la culture matérielle. Enfin, la synthèse tente d’esquisser un modèle de développement régional pour l’époque romaine
