Les Soires. Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts (Bouches-du-Rhône)

International audienceExcavations were carried out in 1990 and 1991 on the Gallo-roman site of Les Soires to test the type of land use plan which was figured out from systematic prospections carried out since 1988 on the west bank of the Berre pond. The digging showed an agricultural building with a central courtyard of about 700 square metres, occupied from the first until the third century A.D., and displaying traditional building techniques of« earth and stone » partly issued from the Iron Age. The study of the everyday ware published separatedly confirms the significance of the pre-roman heritage in the material culture of the inhabitants until the beginning of the 2nd century. A detailed study of the remnants leads to the conclusion that the building was a family wine properly settled as many other farms, on the territory of the former Saint-Blaise oppidum, only 1.5 km far in an area of mollassic plateau and ponds not likely to be large properties of the villae type. As a matter of fact, villae are settled in low areas, located down south and linked to the new centers of power favored by the roman administration. And last, the archeozoological study carried out by Ph. Columeau underlines the significance of sheep breeding in this neighbouring area of the Crau.L'établissement gallo-romain des Soires a fait l'objet en 1990 et 1991 d'une fouille programmée destinée à tester le modèle d'occupation du sol élaboré à partir de prospections systématiques conduites depuis 1988 sur la rive occidentale de l'Étang de Berre. La fouille a mis en évidence un bâtiment agricole à cour centrale d'environ 700 m2, occupé du Ier siècle au milieu du LIF et présentant des techniques de construction traditionnelles en « pierre et terre », héritées en partie de l'Age du Fer. L'étude du mobilier, publiée séparément, confirme le poids de l'héritage préromain dans la culture matérielle des occupants jusqu'au début du IIe siècle. L'examen détaillé des vestiges permet de conclure à une petite exploitation viticole implantée, à l'image de nombreuses autres fermes, sur le territoire de l'ancien oppidum de Saint-Biaise, distant de 1,5 km seulement, dans un secteur de plateaux molassiques et d'étangs peu favorable aux grandes exploitations domaniales de type villae. Ces dernières se développent en effet dans les zones basses situées plus au sud, en liaison avec les nouveaux centres de pouvoir privilégiés par l'administration romaine. Enfin, l'étude archéozoologique conduite par Ph. Columeau souligne l'importance de l'élevage des moutons dans ce secteur voisin de la Crau
