Dynamics of settlement and landscapes in the Arverni city at the end of Antiquity (Auvergne, France). Contribution of systematic surveys and paleoenvironmental studies (4th-6th c. AD)

International audienceThe systematic surveys and paleoenvironmental studies carried out on a large scale in the Limagne plain and on its mountainous margins over the past two decades have contributed to a profound renewal of our perception of the dynamics of land use and landscapes during the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the High Middle Ages. These researches show the strong resilience of the villae network set up from the beginning of the Early Empire in the basin of Clermont, for many of them, moreover, at the site of already occupied at the end of La Tene. The most important of these establishments, of which about forty have been recognized, obviously constitute the very stable and durable framework that structures the countryside surrounding the chief town within a radius of about twenty kilometers, where the “black lands” were already celebrated for their legendary fertility in the 5th c. AD by Sidonius Apollinaris, bishop of Clermont and great landowner. The degree of stability of the villae appears proportional to their initial size. As for the other types of establishments (interpreted as “farms”), they mostly disappear during the 3rd c. AD. We find here a pattern of evolution very similar to that which was recognized in Languedoc and in Provence, where it was interpreted as the sign of a movement of land concentration. The spatial analysis of the settlement pattern and the palaeoenvironmental data reveal, however, that this apparent stability conceals profound changes in the modalities of regional development, from which we begin to better perceive spatial cycles and geographical dynamics. These developments appear to be conditioned, in particular, by the differential development of secondary agglomerations (vici) and by a rebalancing of productions for the benefit of livestock. Archaeo-environmental research conducted in the peripheral mountains (Haute Combraille, Livradois, Forez) echoed these hypotheses, highlighting an important cycle of land clearing linked to the development of pastoral activities at the turning point of Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages.Les prospections systématiques et les études paléoenvironnementales réalisées à grande échelle depuis une vingtaine d’années dans la plaine de la Limagne et sur ses marges montagneuses ont contribué à renouveler profondément notre perception des dynamiques de l’occupation du sol et des paysages durant la fin de l’Antiquité et le début du Haut Moyen Âge. Ces recherches montrent la forte résilience du réseau des villae mises en place dès le début du Haut-Empire dans le bassin de clermont et dans la plaine de la Limagne, pour bon nombre d’entre elles, d’ailleurs, à l’emplacement d’établissements déjà occupés à la fin de La Tène. Les plus importants de ces établissements, dont une quarantaine ont été reconnus, constituent de toute évidence l’armature très stable et durable qui structure la campagne environnant le chef-lieu de cité dans un rayon d’une vingtaine de kilomètres, là où les “terres noires” étaient déjà célébrées pour leur fertilité légendaire au Ve siècle par Sidoine Apollinaire, évêque de Clermont et grand propriétaire terrien. Le degré de stabilité des villae apparaît proportionnel à leur taille initiale. Quant aux autres types d’établissements (interprétés comme des “fermes”), ils semblent pour la plupart disparaître dans le courant du IIIe siècle. On retrouve là un schéma d’évolution très semblable à celui qui a été reconnu en Languedoc et en Provence, où il a été interprété comme le signe d’un mouvement de concentration foncière. L’analyse spatiale du peuplement et les données paléoenvironnementales révèlent toutefois que cette apparente stabilité dissimule de profondes mutations dans les modalités du développement régional, dont on commence à mieux percevoir les cycles et dynamiques spatiales. Ces évolutions semblent conditionnées notamment par le développement différentiel des agglomérations secondaires (vici) et par un rééquilibrage des productions au profit de l’élevage. Les recherches archéo-environnementales conduites dans les montagnes périphériques (Haute Combraille, Livradois, Forez) font écho à ces hypothèses, en mettant en lumière un important cycle de défrichements lié à un développement des activités pastorales à la charnière de l’Antiquité tardive et du Haut Moyen Âge
