Managing organizational change effectively: a case study of Kenya revenue authority

A Project Report Submitted to the Chandaria School of Business in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the award of the Degree of Masters of Business Administration (MBA)Management literature has focused primarily on the private sector, targeted to those trying to lead organizations through organization wide change process. Change management models and research are still relevant for the twenty-first century because the problems are not with their relevancy or their worth as organizational development experts and researchers relate to the speed and complexity of change experienced in our dynamic business environment which brings about different issues for different institutions. The general objective of the study was to analyze the critical success factors for effective change management at KRA. Specifically the study aimed; to establish the relationship between employee understanding of the need for change and effective change management, evaluate the relationship between organizational stakeholder engagement in change initiatives and effective change management, determine the relationship between employee motivational structures and effective change management and to ascertain the relationship between the existence of a clear and practical change implementation plan and change management. The research design used in this research was descriptive research design. The populations of interest for this study were the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) employees based at the headquarters. KRA has a population of two thousand, one hundred and thirty nine (2139) employees at the headquarters that are in classified in ten different departments. The researcher used systematic random sampling method where 143 respondents were selected for the study. The type of data collected for the purposes of this study was primary data where the researcher got the data directly from the respondents or the sample by use of a questionnaire. Inferential statistics was used to analyses the data collected from the questionnaires. The data was displayed in table and figures. The SPSS tool was used to convert the data into an output for interpretation and aid in making the recommendations The study found that stakeholders play a vital role in ensuring effective change management. However, most of the employees as indicated by study were not sure if the stakeholders of KRA were pleased with the processes and structural provisions in the organization. The study also established that motivations to employees enhance their productivity in achieving the set goals and objectives of the institution and the study has also established that the implementation of change plan of KRA is clear and practical. The researcher therefore based on these findings concludes that, understanding of need for change management amongst the employees is of great importance as it addresses implementation of the change management. On the role of stakeholders in change management, stakeholders are so significant as they facilitate the change implementation effectively and contribute to the establishment of clear plans and practical implementation plans. The study concludes by indicating that there is a significant role that motivational structures play in enhancing employee productivity in discharging the duties assigned to them. The study further concludes by indicating that there is a significant relationship between clear and practical implementation plan and change management. The study recommends that KRA and the policy makers should ensure that stakeholders are in agreement and corporate with the provisions of the change implementation processes to ensure optimal efficiency in operations of the organization and continuous update on implementation progress to the stakeholders to ensure accountability. The researcher then recommends further studies on roles played by motivational structures and the standards of the motivational structures on the performance of the employees. There should also be a study done to establish the effect of stakeholder involvement in the KRA change management plan and the efficiency of the operations
