Net (mg/100 ml), rate (mg/100 ml/hour) and efficiency (YATP) of microbial protein production increased (P< .01) with increasing carbohydrate solubility, comparing cellulose (31.3, 1.9, 8.0) starch (36.7, 2.2, 9.3) and sucrose (57.2, 6.5, 12.0). When in vitro inoculum was obtained from sheep fed same carbohydrate as being tested, microbial protein production (net and rate) between starch and sucrose were similar (P>.05).
